Pillion is a romantic and provocative same-sex love story set within the biker community, starring Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård. As one of the most anticipated films of 2025, it follows the story of Colin, portrayed by Harry Melling, a pub singer with a tedious life, and Ray, played by Alexander Skarsgård, a strong, attractive, and conventionally masculine gay man. (Pillion (film), 2025) After their initial hour-long encounter, Ray opted to pursue a closer relationship. Ray is shown not only as an unconventional gay biker but also as someone involved in BDSM, making Colin both his partner and submissive. Initially, Colin’s parents are thrilled that their son has found a committed partner, but their enthusiasm wanes after meeting Ray. Ray must then confront the formidable presence of Colin’s mother, played by Lesley Sharp, who begins to question the healthiness of their relationship and whether her son deserves better treatment. Visually, the film is a feast for the eyes, capturing the gritty yet captivating atmosphere of the biker community. The bold colour palette punctuates the intense passion and dramatic tension between the characters, while the soundtrack, featuring roaring motorbike engines and a poignant musical score, enriches the storytelling, immersing viewers in Ray and Colin's journey.
Colin is portrayed as a gay man who struggles with self-worth, depending strongly on Ray for validation and accepting nearly everything from him until he eventually asserts his independence. Ray expresses affection in his own manner, expressing the dominant role, while Colin is the submissive partner. The film attempts to explore the complexities of a same-sex relationship within the biker community, challenging traditional masculine norms and offering a nuanced portrayal of LGBTQ+ dynamics. However, it is important to consider whether the characters avoid leaning into stereotypes and whether the relationship dynamics authentically contribute to LGBTQ+ representation. The film’s exploration of BDSM may not appeal to all viewers, and I personally found this aspect challenging.
Nevertheless, the film delivers valuable lessons. Regardless of identity, it is important to cultivate self-love and the ability to set boundaries. Recognising one's own worth is essential, as otherwise individuals like Ray may attempt to wield control or diminish self-esteem. The performances by both lead actors and the supporting cast were exceptional.
While the BDSM theme does not personally appeal to me, I found Pillion to be a compelling and enjoyable film. Compared to other recent LGBTQ+ romances like "Call Me by Your Name" and "Brokeback Mountain," Pillion stands out with its bold narrative and deep exploration of unconventional relationships within the biker community. (Movie Review: In submission romance 'Pillion,' BDSM meets barbershop quartet, 2026) Its distinctive take on love and identity offers fresh insights into the portrayal of LGBTQ+ dynamics in modern cinema.
