The Épicuriens Books, we love biography and true stories. Today, we offer a preview of Gisèle Pelicot’s biography. Before the traumatic events that came to public attention in 2020, Gisèle Pelicot was recognized in her community for her joyful spirit, deep appreciation of music, and continuous engagement in local initiatives (Staff, 2024). Her story took a harrowing turn when she was drugged by her husband and assaulted in her sleep by him and other men, a crime that shocked the world when it made international headlines. (Chrisafis, 2024) We recognise that this part of Gisèle's story is deeply distressing and may be difficult to read. We wish to approach this topic with great sensitivity and respect for her experience, and for readers who may be affected. Despite the horror, justice prevailed at the trial in France, where the men responsible were found guilty. (Chrisafis, 2024)

This book tells the powerful story of a woman who overcame severe trauma and adversity. Despite unimaginable challenges, Gisèle Pelicot found the strength to rebuild her life and once again embrace joy.

The Guardian article does not include information about Gisèle Pelicot’s involvement in painting or the establishment of a community music group (Willsher, 2024). (Gisèle Pelicot, 2024) Each of these moments signalled her renewed vitality and hope. Her journey is truly inspirational. If you appreciate stories of resilience and hope, or are seeking encouragement during difficult times, we highly recommend this remarkable book.

For our coming book clubs or group discussions, here are a few questions to inspire meaningful conversation:

- How do Gisèle's creative pursuits, such as painting and music, help her process trauma and reclaim her sense of self? Can art play a similar role in the lives of others facing hardship?

- What moments in the book stood out to you as turning points in Gisèle's journey toward healing? How do these moments reflect broader themes of resilience and community support?
